No comic tome has been the topic of more essays and serious literary dialogue than Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen. It has been named single of the 100 maximum novels of the earlier period century by Time Magazine. Released 20 years in the past, the 12-issue maxi-series was a inventive achievement on behalf of comics. Written “for adults,” Watchmen opened the doors on behalf of thought-provoking and bright comics in the mainstream. Two decades subsequently its arrival, nearby is still nix greater comic tome.
Fashionable honor of the 20-year anniversary, DC Comics released a oversized hardcover, Absolute Watchmen. For the head moment, the chain can be enjoyed by the side of a considerably superior size and with completely re-mastered color. Few would argue the intelligence of Moore’s tome, but grow this — the Absolute Edition makes this epic tale even better. That’s properly, the story lauded by critics and loved by fans is in a jiffy more powerful than several version you tolerate previously read.
The superior size is certainly a plus and the 50 pages of supplemental material is an admirable bonus. It’s almost alarming to perceive Moore’s page-long descriptions on behalf of every panel in his script excerpts. But these bonuses are not pardon? Give rise to the latest edition the spot on Absolute. Wildstorm FX and imaginative chain colorist John Higgins re-mastered the color on behalf of the latest hardcover. While it possibly will not be obvious to the casual person who reads, the latest coloring makes a surprising difference.
Compared to the standard softcover edition so as to has been suspended around on behalf of a decade, the latest flag allow on behalf of greater contrast. The color tone has been adjusted on almost each panel and particular background flag tolerate truly untouched completely. While Gibbons’ art has until the end of time translated Moore’s emotional sentiment, the re-mastered flag give rise to this all the more powerful. The final back copy begins with six one-panel pages, which were shocking even back in 1985. Now, on a superior climb over and with adjusted flag, the six silent pages are explosive. The story builds to this minute and more so than in prior printings, this climactic field reverberates with power.

Moore’s tale of a humanity not including heroes is cacophonously important to today’s America. Set in 1985, eight years subsequently costumed vigilantes were outlawed, Watchmen is part murder mystery, part taking sides drama. When America’s no more than regulated super-being, the god-like Dr. Manhattan, decides to leave Earth, Russia begins a chain of bold moves so as to possibly will be in the lead to nuclear proliferation. While the humanity by the side of well-built is facing calamity, someone has begun homicide the retired costumed heroes of America. A a small amount of of the old guard get down to it an investigation, single so as to leads to a shocking revelation and an unexpected closing moments.
Fashionable Watchmen, Moore shows us a humanity so as to has not here completely frenzied. Not no more than is the escalation of Cold War aggression and the plan of nuclear obliteration insane, but the typescript driving this tale are all touched with madness. Nixon, the just right mixture of power and paranoia, has managed to hang about President through the ’80s. Everyone’s favorite hero, Rorschach, is a violent, delusional sociopath. Even the pragmatic Dr. Manhattan cannot avoidance the manic nature of the individual condition. It’s a frenzied, frenzied, frenzied, frenzied humanity and Moore depicts its darkest corners.
Watchmen is the maximum spectacle of Alan Moore’s gift on behalf of juxtaposition. Employing analogy storytelling, often through a rib recital an old voyager comic tome, Moore manipulates the emotional pitch of Watchmen. A absolute deal of moment is devoted to the everyday man on single limited street corner. It seems, by the side of time, almost like a discarded, distracting from the murder-mystery plot. The relevancy of single street corner, of the lives of a handful of New Yorkers, becomes terribly gain in the final two issues. Much like D.M. Thomas’ novel, The pallid Hotel, Watchmen illuminates the ordinary lives of a a small amount of so so as to we can understand the tragedy so as to strikes the millions of others scarcely like them.
Since much as the story of Watchmen shaped the hope of comics, Dave Gibbons’ art altered the way dwell in viewed the graphic way. Gibbons isn’t terrified to leave central typescript off-panel or focus on an object in the foreground, making the speaking typescript visually obsolete. There’s little combat in Watchmen, a story so as to runs more than 350 pages, so Gibbons uses cinematic tricks to keep our focus through pages leading pages of dialogue. My favorite is a passing field sandwiched between Nite-Owl and Silk Spectre, anywhere the two are short of to the edges of the panel and we watch their conversation unfold in the mirror behind them. Gibbons’ art is the just right compliment to Moore’s expressions. It’s brutal to imagine Watchmen with distinct partners.

Much smarter individuals than myself tolerate provided in-depth analysis of Watchmen above the years. I won’t even try and plunge into the depths of this major labor. Suffice to say it’s quite a dense read and not the kind of tome you pick up on behalf of a fun moment. This is my fifth or sixth recital of Watchmen and I’ve found so as to every moment I read through this tome, I discover something latest. Now with the Absolute edition, I’ve gained an even greater common sense of Moore’s story. This is a work of genius. One so as to has inspired scarcely approximately each writer since its free. Just as Citizen Kane was the father of progressive cinema, the techniques in Watchmen can be seen in dozens of comics on the rack these days. Still, subsequently 20 years, nix other labor comes anywhere close to Watchmen. It remains the top comic-book of all moment and the latest hardcover is without problems the top collection always released.

Twitter, which used to be riddled with some of the top technological journalists, has been taken over by mainstream celebrities. That’s right, news anchors, singers, actors, and even Barack Obama are now among the top Twitter-holics. Is this a sign of things to come or is it just a fad?
Twitter, for those who don’t already know, is a micro-blogging website where you can let people know what you’re doing in 140 characters or less. What makes Twitter so popular? Well, according to their website, it’s all about simplicity. People are always looking for ways to connect with other people and Twitter does just that. They ask just one question, “What are you doing?” and the answers can only be 140 characters in length. This is done via text messaging, instant messaging, via the web or via clients written specifically for use with twitter.
Why is the scope of the most popular twitterati changing from people like Kevin Rose (http://www.twitter.com/kevinrose/) and Leo Laporte (http://www.twitter.com/leolaporte/) to people like Britney Spears (http://www.twitter.com/britneyspears/) and Lance Armstrong (http://www.twitter.com/lancearmstrong/)? That’s the question that I would love to have a solid answer to, but we can only speculate about the reasons. I think that a lot of it is because it’s a way to promote the latest project that the celebrity is working on. This is especially true when it’s not the celebrity themselves doing the Twitter updates.
Twitter is a great site, if you want to share quick updates with your friends or follow the updates of others, it’s also a great way to get quick answers to questions, if you have a lot of knowledgeable followers as well. One of the great things about Twitter is the ability to interact on a quick basis, where as a traditional blog setting means that you have to sit down and write out your post, then wait for comments to come in after people find your post.
It’s not just celebrities, however, that are using Twitter. During the Presidential campaigns, all of the major candidates had someone Twittering on their behalf. Barack Obama (http://www.twitter.com/barackobama/) is on Twitter, and according to the Twitterholic reports, he is the number one person when it comes to followers. Now, we know that due to security laws and such, Barack is not posting his own updates; in fact, his Twitter has not been updated since the day before the swearing in ceremony. Was he updating Twitter himself? Probably not, it was probably someone on his campaign team posting for him, but they were still real, legitimate updates.
Evan Smith, editor of TEXAS MONTHLY, interviews Lance Armstrong, champion cyclist and cancer activist. They discuss a forum about cancer for Presidential candidates and Proposition 15, the upcoming Texas ballot initiative.
Pakistan is poised to face its rival India in the semi finals and we have made cricket a life and death scenario. Our spirits were high after securing victories against big teams like Australia, Sri Lanka and the West Indies, but a prospective showdown with India has given our excitement a new meaning altogether. We are just not willing to accept defeat.
If we were facing any other team in the semi-final instead of India, defeat would have been digestible – but losing to our neighbours is unacceptable. If we were facing any other team in the semi-final instead of India, defeat would have been digestible – but losing to our neighbours is unacceptable. The match is being looked at as a battle, a war between the green shirts and the blue and the Mohali stadium is being portrayed as a battlefield like Panipat.
]]>
The media is also playing on the nerves of the nation by adding to already smoldering public emotions. A media personality was heard saying that we need not win the final but the semi-final should be won at any cost.
Here’s the million dollar question:
Why can’t we just look at cricket as a game?
Why has the semi-final become a case of dignity and shame? Just because we are playing against India?
I am not pleading in favour of India, but what I’d like to point out is that the India we are getting so worked up about is the same country whose Bollywood is ruling the hearts of Pakistani fans. We love to listen to Indian music; we love to watch Indian entertainment shows. And the reason for this addiction is that we have almost the same culture, same traditions and same people.
Since 1947, both countries are at loggerheads with each other but this hatred has hatched nothing but poverty, unemployment, instability and perpetual crises for both countries. Why are we unable to understand that the division of the sub-continent was not to fan hate mongering but to live in peac?. What did we reap in the wars of 1948, 1965 and 1971?
We should shun this dual behavior and stand united for the sake of regional peace and love. Let’s stop loving to hate India and stop referring to the semi-final as a ‘do or die’ situation.
From early in his term, President Obama emphasized his commitment to improving the health and wellness of federal employees. And it wasn’t an empty promise.
The first family already is leading by example: The president is a dedicated runner and avid basketball player, and the first lady has involved students in cultivating a vegetable garden at the White House to promote healthy foods. Most recently, Michelle Obama oversaw the opening of a farmers market just minutes from the White House, and the Treasury and Veterans Affairs departments. As an employer, we are looking for ways to create a healthier workforce, because we know that if you all are healthy and happy and moving, you’ll come to work and you’ll work really hard,” the first lady said to the market’s customers on opening day. “And as many private companies have demonstrated, making employee wellness a priority can save health care costs down the road and make for a stronger workplace.”
The president met with industry leaders in May to discuss strategies for improving employee health, and he directed the Office of Personnel Management to develop wellness best practices and a plan for the federal workforce. In response, OPM this summer announced its work-life campus initiative, a joint effort with the Federal Reserve Board, General Services Administration and Interior Department. The four agencies, located within blocks of one another, will develop and share facilities, possibly including green space and a healthy cafeteria.
The initiative is just one of several demonstration projects that will unfold nationwide. The campus concept allows agencies to experiment with cost-effective solutions to making the workplace healthier and to gather feedback from employees.
“We will work hand in glove over the next year to review and improve the services and facilities available to the more than 6,000 federal employees that comprise our campus,” OPM Director John Berry said in a statement announcing the program. “By combining our efforts, we can more adequately and economically address the issues of wellness and employee satisfaction.”
The administration also has asked agencies as part of the fiscal 2011 budget process to take inventory of their health and wellness programs. In a June memorandum, Office of Management and Budget Director Peter R. Orszag required all agencies to catalog their ongoing efforts with the aim of establishing a baseline of current offerings and helping OPM develop a comprehensive program. The goal is to see 75 percent of employees participating in health and wellness initiatives by 2010.
Agency leaders will be integral to the success of this effort. To set the tone and encourage some healthy competition, Orszag recently introduced an OMB pedometer challenge. Employees can log their steps and other health information on an internal Web site, where they can see how they stack up against the director and colleagues in other OMB divisions. Each month the top employee will be treated to lunch with the director, and the divisions with the highest average steps and the most improved average will receive a “healthy happy hour” of vegetables and red wine. In practicing what they preach, the Obamas and other administration officials are reinforcing the notion that a healthy workplace is a happy one.
A Healthy Investment
Worksite wellness programs have been shown to benefit both employees’ health and employers’ pocketbooks. In a 2008 review of 50 wellness interventions, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Task Force on Community Preventative Services found that office health programs reduced tobacco use and fat consumption, improved blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and increased productivity. The task force develops a guide to help communities tailor their own health programs and policies.
Many private sector companies already have invested in such initiatives. A 2009 survey by consultancy Watson Wyatt and the National Business Group on Health found nearly 80 percent of large employers offered health risk assessments, 60 percent had lifestyle improvement programs and 52 percent had weight management programs.
Aetna, a health benefits provider, has developed a broad wellness initiative aimed at keeping its own medical costs down. The program begins with a health risk assessment, which allows employees to get a physical and learn their body mass index, cholesterol levels and other vital numbers. Employees then can participate in Wellness Works, an incentive-based fitness initiative that awards points for physical activity and healthy food choices, and earn up to 0 annually in additional pay or premiums. Nearly 60 percent of Aetna employees nationwide participate in the program; many, including company president Mark Bertolini, take part in competitive team fitness challenges. Several Aetna locations also have onsite fitness centers with extended hours and a variety of cardio and strength classes.
]]>
Wellness Works serves as a model around which Aetna can design programs for its clients. “We are able to demonstrate to potential customers that there is a benefit to this,” said Fred Laberge, a company spokesman. Aetna’s annual increase in medical costs is about half the nationwide average of 8 percent to 9 percent per employee.
Federal agencies also have targeted employee health with a range of initiatives, giving the administration a head start as it develops a governmentwide wellness strategy.
Options, and More Options
Fitness centers and exercise classes already are common across agencies, particularly in areas with large concentrations of federal employees. Many offer basic equipment, aerobics classes and extended hours to accommodate work schedules.
For instance, as part of a comprehensive lifestyle and health program that began in 1978, CDC has professionally staffed fitness facilities on its six largest campuses, as well as smaller gyms in satellite offices. These centers offer instruction ranging from Pilates, tai chi and yoga to spin and body sculpting classes. Employees also have access to softball, basketball and volleyball facilities and measured walking trails.
Program fees vary. CDC appropriates funding for its facilities and classes so it can offer them free of charge. The Environmental Protection Agency, which has fitness centers at its headquarters in Washington and all regional offices, subsidizes memberships. Federal employees in the San Francisco area can join a central gym where rates vary according to pay grade, starting at for GS-6 and below, and reaching 0 annually for GS-14 and above. Some agencies, including the State Department, partner with area fitness clubs to provide discounted membership rates. Fifteen gyms in the Washington area offer such deals to State employees, and participation ranges from three to 40 people, depending on the club.
Where gyms are not cost-effective, agencies have developed innovative alternatives. The Defense Contract Management Agency has a virtual fitness program employees can access by phone, Internet and e-mail. Components include workout planning and weight management tools, attendance logs, risk assessments, an incentives program and fitness center reimbursement.
To encourage physical activity, some agencies allow employees to visit fitness centers during work hours. CDC employees can negotiate flex time with supervisors. Coast Guard military personnel and Secret Service law enforcement officers are allowed three hours per week for physical activity and DCMA employees can use duty time to exercise.
Though fitness is a key feature of overall employee wellness, agencies also are developing facilities and programs to address other aspects of health, such as nutrition, stress relief and access to “green” space.
The Interior Department is revitalizing its headquarters, which includes a new cafeteria. “We want it to feature a variety of foods in a range of economical prices — especially organic, nutritional food from local sources — and we will work to make the facility itself green,” said Rhea Suh, assistant secretary for policy, management and budget. “The work-life campus initiative also ties into broader federal efforts on healthy food choices and reducing the carbon footprint of federal facilities.”
The Agriculture Department is making strides toward a greener workplace with the inaugural People’s Garden, a project to turn paved surfaces to grass, plant trees and promote energy efficiency. The goal is to build similar gardens at USDA facilities worldwide.
CDC hosts rotating farmers markets on its campuses and encourages employees to bring only healthy foods to meetings. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s headquarters in Silver Spring, Md., offers a meditation group with nearly 70 participants monthly, as well as chair massage appointments and holistic nutrition lunch seminars. And in July, State began a six-month trial providing 10 bikes at its headquarters in Washington for employees to check out during work hours. According to officials, more employees than expected have taken advantage of the program and often ride between buildings in suits and loafers.
Raising Awareness
Part of the challenge in fostering a healthier workforce is making employees aware of their unhealthy habits and motivating them to change their behavior. To create a culture of wellness, agencies reach out to employees through educational activities. A number have onsite clinics that offer health services, allowing employees to minimize time and resources spent seeking basic care and to learn about disease prevention and treatment.
The State Department’s Office of Medical Services coordinates a health program for domestic and overseas offices. Employees can participate in smoking cessation programs, and breast cancer and bereavement support groups. The office organizes monthly programs on topics such as travel medicine, meditation and arthritis, posting videos of the sessions on the department’s intranet. The office also offers day-long health fairs in Washington with yoga classes and health screenings. State maintains primary care and health screening facilities and programs for employees posted abroad as well.
Other agencies offer health classes, screenings and immunizations free of charge to employees. The Securities and Exchange Commission hosts nutrition seminars and osteoporosis checks, and CDC organizes first aid, CPR and ergonomics courses.
A number of special events governmentwide aim to increase interest in health and fitness. EPA hosts an annual “Walk to Wellness,” a two-mile summer event in the Washington area. The agency plans to sponsor the walk quarterly and expand it to other regions. At the Homeland Security Department, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center sponsors a weight-loss competition among its offices, based on the TV program Biggest Loser, and Customs and Border Protection organizes a “HealthierCBP” fitness challenge.
In fall 2008, State’s Office of Medical Services/Health Promotion sponsored a series of four free hour-long nutrition and cooking seminars. The sessions, held over lunch and organized by The Cancer Project, a nonprofit for cancer prevention and health promotion, focused on incorporating low-fat foods, fiber, dairy alternatives and antioxidants into meals. Employees participated in discussions about nutrition, observed a cooking demonstration and sampled healthy dishes.
Recently, OPM launched FedsGetFit, a wellness campaign focused on fitness, nutrition, making healthy choices and prevention. The first event will be a fitness expo on Oct. 27, where agency leaders will join Congress members and National Football League players to promote work-life programs and participate in a one-mile walk.
In implementing new initiatives or growing current ones, agencies will face funding challenges. Work-life programs receive money directly from agency budgets, but agencies have made varying commitments to these initiatives. In the private sector, best practices suggest that comprehensive wellness programs cost 0 to 0 per employee annually.
As they determine the best places to make investments, agencies are looking for feedback and ideas from employees at all levels. “Not every idea is one you decide to implement,” said Mike Weber, an official at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards. “But the tensions [among competing ideas] help channel enthusiasm.”
In July, OPM outlined elements agencies should include in their wellness programs. Designated points of contact will report on agency health and wellness programs, services, costs and participation through an online WellCheck system. The goal is to bring agencies up to the standards outlined in July, while allowing them flexibility to tailor their offerings based on employee needs. Many programs are administered by human resources staffs, and OPM’s Berry chairs monthly meetings with the Chief Human Capital Officers Council to facilitate communication and cross-agency initiatives.
According to Wesley Carpenter of EPA’s Office of Administration and Resources Management, the administration’s involvement in employee health is an important promotional tool. “The [OPM] initiative is a catalyst and a great opportunity to expand our tentacles and reach more people,” he said.

Haiku is a type of short poem, which originated in Japan during the 17th century. What set it apart from other types of poetry was that it began as kind of game among the merchants and lower class citizens. True to its origins, Haiku developed characteristics that are quite different from the elegant court and love poetry of its times. It is spontaneous, crisp, and used images that were quite ordinary.
The aim of Haiku as with any other type of poetry is to express as much as possible in as little words as possible. But in Haiku this primary rule is followed to the extreme. Usually, a haiku is just three lines long, with 17 syllables. For brevity sake, articles, pronouns and other grammar words are often removed from a haiku.
So how do you write a Haiku? The key to Haiku is to catch the fleeting idea. The best Haiku comes to our mind quite unexpectedly. It might be a trivial incident. An image from nature will be sufficient. The cat arching its body after a sleep, a dog wagging its tail, an ant talking with another ant, a butterfly fixed to a flower, etc, will be enough. Usually, a season word like rain summer, wind or anything that relate to climate and weather is ideal for a Haiku.
]]>
See that the image is concrete and they do not directly allude to abstract concepts like afterlife, final judgment etc. A good rule of thumb is to see if someone can enjoy your Haiku without having an insight into your philosophy. Another important thing to remember is that your poem should contain only one or two images. Too many images can confuse the reader. But the real fun in a haiku is to conceal such cosmological truths in simple looking verses that talks about trivial things. Matsuo Basho, a seventeenth century Japanese hermit excelled in this. His most famous poem goes like this:
The old pond—
a frog jumps in,
sound of water.
In the nineteenth century, poets like Ezra Pound and other imagist poets were attracted to Haiku and adapted it to fit the English Language. His famous poem “A metro at a Station” is an example for this:
A Metro at a Station
Petals on a wet black bough
With the examples given above, you can start writing your own haiku poem. So what are you waiting for?

A man of undaunted hope, Mr. Michael P. Garofalo is a man flowing with blood enriched with green vitality, for he is a globally noted phytophile. Though he was a librarian professionally, out of his zeal and enthusiasm, he took up many a program of distinct order.
He is used to burn midnight’s oil, no doubt. It seems obviously evident when we go through his blogs and writings and teachings. Walking, writing, blogging, teaching and more over gardening reveal his diversified embranchment of fruitful activities. This moment, a haiku of my own is coming into memory:
wish to grow, branch
and to spread-
you love the tree
Mr. Garofalo is a poet also. Being a phytophile, his feelings are full of tender and splendor imagination and imagery.
He aptly describes his poetry blog ‘Cuttings’ as ‘Haiku, concrete and short poems’. He wrote a number of haiku dividing them season-wise like winter, spring, summer and fall.

Though he says like this, many of his poems though not suit the form and philosophy of haiku; no doubt, they are full of haiku mood and brood. His haiku are content oriented paramount.

Garafalo’s haiku blossom in the hearts of the readers.
He distinguishes between life and death with reference to a frog.

Hopping is the characteristic feature of liveliness until it reaches its eternal goal. On the other hand, death is miserable.
a frog flows

When these two haiku are read soon one after another, the misery of death is envisaged in its gloom. This kind of feeling is termed ‘aware’ in Zen philosophy.
How the physical nature is all prop for haiku, the inner nature of man is also well adapted in haiku.

It is natural for the children that they can not hide their feelings. Unhypocritic they are! This nature of children is described in the above haiku.
In this way, Mr. Garafalo carries a tray of haiku along with mini-poems for the appeal of poetry-lovers.
If some sarcastically punch is added to the human nature, the haiku is separately known as ‘senryu’.

a broken wisdom-tooth
It is unwise to eat more than needed. Gluttony leads to ill-health. But the tongue throws it away, and throws the junk of food into the bowels. This truth is sarcastically said as ‘broken wisdom-teeth’.
Though some haiku like “daily rain… this glass of water” are repeated, their repetition gives a feeling of drinking the poetic nectar twice.

Haiku is one of the oldest forms of poetry yet the form has recently been discovered and embraced by writers around the world. It is believed that in 1970’s haiku as a literary genre got highlighted internationally. Today, it is written in English as well as in several different languages and enjoyed widely in nearly 50 countries. But the actual credit for this haiku boom goes to Paul Louis who with the publication of his collection entitled Haiku, in the early 20th century, revived this genre. And since then the popularity and internationalization of haiku has kept on multiplying.
Haiku is short and light poetry with traditionally 5-7-5 sound syllables with a season word. Historically speaking, this poetic form had its roots in tanka, a kind of prayer/incantations to Gods by the Japanese. Tanka, with its 5-7-5-7-7 sound syllable count, its lofty ancestry and its shortness and ease for memorization, later became the favourite poetical form of the Japanese Imperial court. And from 9th to 12th centuries it reached the highest popularity and brilliance. However, in the 12th century a new form generated out of tanka, with the rival of an old Chinese form of linking tanka poems together in a novel way. The poem was ‘split’ in half, allowing one author to write the first three lines 5-7-5 and the concluding lines i.e. 7-7 part to be written by another, especially by men. This chain of writing did not stop there, again a new 5-7-5 was written as an answer to the previous 7-7 links and this genre was called ‘renga’ (meaning linked elegance). Renga became a fashionable form of poetry in the 14th century with two main styles: a serious, courtly style and the comic style, especially of the merchant class. Basho was a renga master of the comic style. This poetic form was not as simple to write as it appeared. Writing a good hokku i.e. the starting verse and haikai (any verse in a renga) was really a challenging task. Thus all could not meet the standards of a good hokku/ haikai. The quality of the renga tended to fluctuate with Buson and Issa and in the beginning of the 19th century M.Shiki declared renga officially dead and also ended the ongoing debate on hokku/ haikai by combining the two names into a new one- haiku.
Haiku is the smallest literary form with lot many rules and it is difficult for one to follow all the rules. Moreover, several of the rules are so contradictory with each other that there is no way to honour them all at once. Say, for example, the sound units of the three liners have a wide range of patterns-seventeen syllables in one line, seventeen syllables written in three lines, seventeen syllables written in three lines divided into 5-7-5, seventeen syllables written in a vertical (flush left or centred) line, less than seventeen syllables written in three lines as short- long- short, less than seventeen syllables written in three vertical lines as short- long- short and writing in one breath (which nearly covers 12-17 syllables). Second, the number of images and the kind of images which again do not follow any fixity- a haiku with two images that are only comparative when illuminated by the third image; a haiku with two images that are only associative when illuminated by the third image, two images that are only in contrast when illuminated by the third image and then the kind of images- images that evoke simple rustic seclusion/accepted poverty (sabi), images evoking classical elegant separateness (shubumi), images that evoke nostalgic romantic images/austere beauty(wabi),images from nature, images not from nature, season words (kigo), non-season words (muki), lofty / uplifting images. Third, the rules of punctuation- no punctuation to attain ambiguity, all normal sentence punctuation are also admissible- a colon (:) and full stop (.), a pause (;), three dots for something left unsaid, a comma for a slight pause, a dash for saying the same thing in other words, capitalizing the first word of every line or only the first word as well as the proper names according to English rules. Next, the rules of grammar– eliminating all the possible uses of gerunds and adverbs, little use of pronouns, ending the haiku with a noun, avoiding too many/all verbs and prepositions. Finally, the rules of rhetoric– avoiding rhymes/ bringing in rhymes by rhyming the last words in the first and third lines, using rhymes in other places within the haiku, using assonance and alliteration; and using puns and paradoxes to attain levels of meaning in haiku.
It is quite natural that with so many options, a beginner of haiku might get highly confused and find it difficult to start off with. But it is to be noted here that rules are not written in stone. Thus, it can be said that there is no one way to write a haiku, there is no one style or technique that is absolutely the best. Every writer can work out for herself. In fact, the varieties in style and technique of haiku provide enough freedom for the readers and writers of haiku to expose, expand and to investigate.
Today one can notice new trends emerging in haiku from several countries, including as well. Now, there is no strict adherence to the old, traditional guidelines. Despite a small community of haiku writers in , the haiku form has been widely experimented and written in several regional languages, including English and Hindi.
]]>
In the traces of haiku can be found in the beginning of the 20th century. The Indian Nobel Laureate, Rabindra Nath Tagore, is probably considered to be the first haikuist of . His collection of haiku like poems ‘Fireflies’ was published in English and Bengali. The names of Subramania Bharati, Prof. Satya Bhushan Verma and Prof. B.S. Agarwala are also familiar names in regional haiku in . Among the Indian English haiku poets the few familiar names are- Dwarakanath H. Kabadi, N.V.Subbaraman, Angelee Deodhar, Kala Ramesh, K.Ramesh, Mujeeb Yar Jung, I.H.Rizvi, Urmila Kaul, D.C.Chambial, Kanwar Dinesh Singh, R.K.Singh, Mahashweta Chaturvedi, etc. Yet, not many people are aware of haiku or its intricacies because of lack of literature and/or criticism in various languages in the Indian market.
Haiku writers from all over the country, even though small in number, have contributed their lot in promoting this poetic form in India and out of the many contributors writing in English R.K.Singh as a haikuist stands apart. R.K.Singh who has been known for economy of expression and brevity for the last three decades has drawn attention of readers to his haiku, first published in trilogies Every Stone Drop Pebble (pub.1999) and Peddling Dreams (pub.2003 in Pacem in Terris), and more recently in The River Returns (pub.2006, a collection of tanka and haiku). Abdul Rashid Bijapure seems right in his observation that “perhaps it is the single-minded journey of R.K. Singh to press for brevity in expression that leads him to devote his poetic energy to the three line haiku poems.” Even Singh says “ a haiku is terse, dynamic and complete poetry, rendering the vital energy, which animates not only an individual’s small world but also the entire cosmos.” For Singh it is rather a self-disciplining spiritual exercise marked by living moment ness of a moment, imagining a moment:
After morning walk
the trio gossip each day
fresh revelation
Each day of our life is full of happenings and one such is captured here with all subtlety in the same fashion as a photographer clicks a moment.
The poem:
Ripe on the branches
mangoes fall one by one
end of the season
is highly sensuous in appeal. The reader gets an immediate image of a season. The ripeness of the mangoes can be seen and felt in the lines.
The lines:
The leaves sway
to fly like birds
free in the sky
evoke the image even before the eye blinks. Like the swaying of the leaves, the lines appear soft, light and rhythmic.
Singh’s nature poems perfectly meet the traditional haiku standards:
Smell of Kamini
In front of my house excites:
hummingbirds mate
Or
The night queen fragrance
seeps from the window
my bedroom blooms
The naturalness of the lines instantly hits the sensory organs of the readers. The two poems:
Shining from the blade of grass
a drop on earth’s breast:
tribute to sun
and
The mynahs
herald the day clamouring
for moths
reflect the honesty of the poet in creating the images. There is no artificiality or imaginary renderings in these lines. With minutest details the poet constructs a striking image and allows space for reader to create his own image and interpretations.
Singh is not only a sharp watcher of the thinginess of the things in nature but is also a keen observer of complex human nature. Running away from reality is human nature and this hollowness of human beings is described in these poems with a tinge of irony:
She hides the mirror
with rose and lipstick
and keeps her fiction
and
He closes the eyes
expanding inner space
a short – cut tour
Some of his haiku appear as if speaking directly to the reader. To quote:
Among the white hairs
a solitary black one
keeps her hope alive
and
She reads my age in
the synthetic dark of moustache
and whitening chest
Singh’s haiku have distinct local and Indian cultural flavour too:
Red oleander and
hibiscus calling morning
to Kali
The poet is unconventional in his form. He does not strictly abide by the traditional haiku rules. The adjective in the following poem depicts the unconventionality in the poet’s style:
After prolonged heat wave
sky watery explosion
earth lovely doom
The use of the adjective ‘lovely’ with the noun ‘doom’ is highly contrastive.
The poet’s experimentation with the syllabic pattern is again his break away from the rigid rules. Some of his poems are in 5-7-5 pattern, while the others are in 4-6-4, 3-5-3 and 4-7-4 patterns:
No letters today
addresses of his dead friends
graying in diary
Monsoon shower
after a long heat wave
monotony breaks
My bedroom
a maze of cobweb
spiders breed
Seeking good news
I watch the lines on my palms
taking new turns
This experimentation with the syllabic structure is actually due to the globalization of haiku and thus Singh alone is not to be blamed for it. In fact, it is to be noted here that the varied syllabic structures do not mar the haikuness of his haiku. His three liners, even though roped in different sound patterns/breathe, evoke the images explicitly.
In haiku there is no place for didacticism or philosophy. But Singh tries out even this trait in his poems. To cite-
He sweeps yellow leaves
or gathers years in a heap
burns to merge with dust
The first line gives a clear picture of the persona who is engaged in a task of cleaning the garden. The second line is suggestive of aging or nearing of death or the autumn of one’s life whereas the ‘yellow leaves’ of the first line suggests winter i.e. death. Thus both the lines focus the temporality of all existence, which further gets strengthened in the last line- ‘burns to merge with dust’. The last line sounds philosophical and recalls to one’s mind the Biblical line-‘ Thou cometh from dust and thou returneth to dust’. Moreover, the word ‘burn’ is again related to Hindu rites where the body is brought to the crematorium ground to burn on the funeral pyre. It seems that the poet was all set to bring in the epigrammatic terseness in this haiku. It is to be remembered here that haiku celebrates the beauty of the moment, the truth and minuteness of the moment with clear images rather than witty and layered meanings.
Similarly, the following haiku is highly philosophical in tone:
Long forgotten
the beginning and the end
exist in middles
Except for the three-liner haiku pattern, the lines do not fulfill any of the requirements of a haiku. Neither the reader gets an instant flash of the image nor does he come to a clear idea. He is only left with an option of reading between the lines. And if this is done to a haiku, it is then no haiku. The second line of the poem–‘beginning and the end’– is here, probably suggestive of the cycle of life and death. And the last line depicts the mediocrity of people in the present times. Man has forgotten the essence of his existence. He is only given to materiality and his comfort zone is his ‘present’, which he never wants to leave. This haiku is a poor one. In a book review R.K. Singh comments, “It often depresses me to read in the ‘form’ of haiku moral commands, philosophical teaching, sentimental reflections and didactic expressions. Haiku is not epigrammatic poetry or short saying; nor is it intellectualizing, romanticizing, or pedantry”. The poet fails to create a haiku in those three lines; he fails to practice what he says.
Singh puts the first letter of his three liners in capital. Most of his haiku are expressed in a concise and crystallized form, in present tense with a seasonal word. The poems focus on “what is happening” at a particular moment with all its freshness and truth.
Challenging/experimenting with established/classical rules requires a lot of guts. Singh’s experiments with the classical rules of haiku and the dexterity with which he handles his haiku are sufficient enough to define his poetic talent /craftsmanship.

Umaga d. CM Punk, Samoan Spike — pin (***1/2).
So why is Umaga battling Pepsiman anyway? Anyways, hometown rule applies here as Punk does the job, though it was a really good opener otherwise with lots of nifty spots like G2S countered into a Samoan drop. I don’t understand WWE’s obsession having their talent ALWAYS lose in their hometown, unless you’re Jim Ross, then you’re embarassed on a grand scale.
ECW champion Christian d. Jack Swagger, handful of tights — pin (***1/2).
I really enjoyed this match and loved when Christian jumped down from the top rope over Swagger and ran to the other side haha… classic Christian. End came when Swagger went for the gutwrench powerbomb, but Xian flipped out, went for the killswitch, as Swagger pulled away, then Xian did a rollup, with a handful of tights FTW and to further the feud. I guess Christian is the new dirtiest player in the game. Kind of a lame ending, though. Too bad Christian isn’t “popular” enough to have a clean win.
Meanwhile, Edge and Chavo argue. Edge told Chavo to do something about the cross-dresser calling his aunt a pig. Edge is awesome and one of the best actors in WWE. He can make a mediocre promo amazing by the way he delivers it.
John Morrison d. Shelton Benjamin, Starship Pain — pin (***).
Sadly Charlie Haas has dropped the impersonation gimmick. While I’m excited to see the World’s Greatest Tag team reunited, The Great Charli > WGTT. Anyways, this was a good match, but it was missing something. Maybe it was the crowd; they didn’t quite seem to be buying Nitro as a face. Anyhoo. great stuff at the end as both guys hit some beautiful spots and in the end Nitro wins with his flippy spinny indy move. Both these guys need more match time; they can put on a hell of a show.
Comedy segment saw The Miz straight up jack Alfonso Soriano at ringside and mentions Jannetty (which was a nice reference), bunch of Ducks, Chicago Cubs & SMH. Then bizarrely, Santino makes the save for Soriano and calls him The Fiz. Raw’s two most hilarious wrestlers against one another? They should keep that going. A Miz-Santino feud would be priceless.
Intercontinental champion Rey Mysterio d. Chris Jericho w/ short pants, 619 — pin (***).
Jericho is getting stale, he should go back to his smarmy and arrogant ways like his WCW days. Anyways, Jericho throws Mysterio around the ring like a rag doll and Rey is soooo small compared to Jericho, I don’t think Y2J could make this feud work because of it. Anyhoo, the match would have been average if Jericho hadn’t done the promo with the ‘guarantee’ that there wouldn’t be a 619; gave a story to the match. And I usually hate Mysterio matches, because they’re so formulaic, but that was a good match, thanks to Jericho. Rey is a total shell of his former self, however. The announcers talk about how he’s a “high-flyer” but he hardly does that anymore. He should retire so he can walk 10 years from now.
]]>
Flying Batista d. WWE champion Randy Orton w/ out hair, attacking the referee — DQ (*1/2).
Finlly, a toilet break match. Orton can be okay, but needs someone to help him, and that man is not Batista. Same goes for Batista. They just cancel each other out. Anyways, there was a sizable RKO chant and this was not a pro-DAVE crowd. This match just sucked the energy out of the show. Both of these guys are like video game characters. Repetitive moves, awkward animations, overexcessive normal mapping, and occasionally victim to lag. If Orton’s finishing move was a headlock, he’d win every match. End came when Orton deliberately got himself disqualified, attacking the referee in a cheap ending. Those kind of finishes just make you wonder why he didn’t slap the referee two seconds into the match and leave. Post-match, Legacy came down to attack Big Dave, but a 90 year old man makes the save. Whoo. Dammit Flair, stay retired.
John Cena w/ odds to overcome d. The Big Show, Attitude Adjustment — pin (*).
I love how Cena looks like he’s about to cry when he’s in that staredown. The Cena Sucks chant is waaay louder as it should be. And if I had a dollar for everytime they said “No one evokes more emotion out of the WWE Universe than John Cena.” and “The Worlds largest athlete.” for this match alone I’d be able to buy the WWE 100 times over. And man, it’s amazing how quickly and severely this PPV turned from possible PPV of the year to utter snoozefest. Anyhoo, in the end, Cena overcomes adversity and by God I am so inspired! Miracles do happen! Boring match, though. So if Cena is Superman, does that make having a good match with the Big Show his kryptonite?
World champion Edge d. Jeff Hardy, DDT off the top rope — pin (***).
This has been a show where champions come out first. End came when Matt Hardy interfered and attacked Jeff, Cowboy Bob Orton-style with a cast on his arm. This was a good match going through until Matt Hardy came out. Judgment Day is then over and there’s no Punk and no cashing in, just credits. I guess the hometown rule is still in effect. Still Edge is still the champion, so all is right with the world.
Final Thoughts: I didn’t like Punk losing to Umaga, and the “beat the guys in their hometown for heat” thing is dumb. And he never should’ve lost to Kane either. Also the ending to Orton/Batista was the same ending as Orton/Cena at No Way Out 08 (consistency for Randy or just laziness?). Anyways, Cena/Show and Orton/Batista were the only blah matches of the night, but the rest were fun entertaining matches.
Man of the Night: Miz – he has certainly stepped his game up recently and I’m loving it. We’ve needed a “get under your skin” heel in the worst way; he’s so annoying, and yet you cant stop watching because he takes trash talking to a whole new level
Death Threat of the Night: Flair – he should seriously just stay retired. I hope this is a one time thing, and he won’t be back to wrestle.
Best Match of the Night: Xian v. Swagger – great match.
Worst Match of the Night: Cena v. Show – boring match.
Jobber of the Night: Punk losing two back to back PPVs. Guess CM Punk didn’t drink his Pepsi Natural before the match.
Squash of the Night: So Legacy have been completely dismantled by a 39 year old non-wrestler and a 60 year old wrestler who retired. Nice writing, WWE. The only time I liked Legacy was when Orton kissed Stephanie as I didn’t expect that. Otherwise Legacy have suffered from bad writing, bad promos, and horrible matches.
Blown Spot of the Night: Mysterio took what looked like a bad fall, although he looked ok afterwards, but for a second I thought he was a goner.
Surprise of the Night: Edge-Hardy going on last, and Punk not cashing-in.
Over Done: Matt Hardy run-in was unnecessary.
Homo-erotic Moment: Cole and Lawler acting surprised when Cena won; “He went for the impossible… and somehow he achieved it!” / “Fearless win!” / “Cena has made a believer out of a lot of people tonight!”
Screw the Smarks: No Punk, and a pointless Matt run-in. WWE is dragging some of these storylines out much too long.
Quotable Quotes: “That chair is always dangerous!” — Michael Cole during the WWE title match.

Road safety is a priority of ClearView Traffic Group. Not just content with their hugely popular solar powered road studs, they’re constantly introducing new road safety products such as the HazLight Micro and HazLight Emergency which have been proven to reduce accidents by supplementing the warning triangle we all reach for when we break down.
But back to the solar powered road studs. Unlike conventional cat’s eyes which rely on the reflection from a vehicle’s headlights, Astucia bring the SolarLite embedded road stud to the table which charges from natural sunlight in the day to project bright flashing light on the roads at night. The result? Far less road accidents and greater visibility for motorists. The intelligent SolarLite road studs also provide driver’s more time to react to potentially hazardous situations on the road increasing everyone’s road safety.
The SolarLite road studs are ultra durable and have impressive longevity. A particularly helpful aid when road conditions are poor, their presence on the roads helps to keep all drivers and motorists alert and ready to react to adapting situations.
You needn’t take our word for it though – the stats speak for themselves. The Astucia SolarLite hardwired stud provides a flexible approach to traffic management and a versatile range of uses as part of an overall road management system including lane delineation and control, pedestrian crossing and tidal/contra flow.
No project is too big or too small for ClearView Traffic Group and we pride ourselves on providing precise, rapid traffic data capture which is fed back to you so that you can make confident, informed decisions.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Belgian Beer
Belgium is a small country but there is nothing small about their production of beers and ales. In fact, since the Middle Ages Belgium has had a reputation for producing quality beers, and they have influenced beer and ale production in many other countries, including the United States.
By conservative estimates, there are over four-hundred-fifty different types of beer brewed in Belgium. If you take a Belgium beer tour vacation, you can visit brewery after brewery and sample just about every kind of beer. Beer that is brewed in Belgium includes white beers or blanche beers. These are also called wheat beers and sometimes have a bit of a taste of citrus.
Lambic beer is a regional beer that can be found in and around Brussels. This draft beer is described by the Brussels’ tourism accounts as being a “non-malted wheat beer, fermented by wild, airborne yeasts.” The Belgians have also taken this Lambic beer and combined two versions together to make Gueuze, which is said to have a sparkle much like champagne.
]]>
Still other Lambic beers are Faro and Kriek–Faro is more or less a light Lambic beer, while Kriek is a Lambic beer that is fermented further with the addition of raspberries and cherries. Belgium is also famous for brown beers, red beers, and golden beers. Brown beers have a unique blend of caramel-like sweetness mixed with a sour taste that comes from many months of aging. Red beers come from red barley–they too combine sweet and sour tastes in a unique blend that is sometimes described as fruity.
Golden Beers are somewhat like a pilsner lager, but they are obtained from pale hops and malts and ale yeasts. The original pilsner beer came from Bohemia, which is located in the Czech Republic. It is highly carbonated and has a thick white head. The taste is somewhat tangy with a bit of bitterness. A pilsner usually has five-percent alcohol content.
The oldest beer brewers in Belgium are actually the Trappist monks, who use methods and recipes that have been passed down through the centuries to make distinctly Trappist beers. There are six different Trappest monasteries that currently support themselves by brewing beer. These include Orval, Achel, Chimay, Westyleteren, Rochefort and Westmalle. The beers they make usually bear the name of the monastery.
There also Abbey beers which are produced in Belgium. In most cases, the beers are not produced in monasteries but there may be a business relationship where an abbey contracts a commercial brewery to produce a certain beer. Abbey beers include Duvel, Leffe, Kwak, Affligem, Corsendonk, Grimbergen and Karmeliet.
Currently, Belgium has around one-hundred-twenty-five different breweries producing close to five hundred beers. They are sold in both small cafes that may have only a few brands to much larger bars that might have a thousand or more kinds. The Belgians are masters when it comes to beer brewing and having an appreciation for quality pilsners, beers, ales and lagers. You can find just about any flavoring too, from strawberry or raspberry to chocolate. If you can arrange it, give yourself a real treat and try some of these Belgian brews.

The Ryder Cup Matches, one of the last great sporting events founded on prestige rather than prize money, span 34 competitions over 77 years. The origin of the idea to stage international matches between the best American professionals and those of Great Britain.
Ryder was an Englishman from St Albans in Hertfordshire, who made his fortune selling penny seed packets. Before the matches at Wentworth, Ryder had engaged the British star Abe Mitchell as his personal golf tutor. Mitchell beat the reigning British Open Champion Jim Barnes, 8 and 7, in the singles, and then partnered with George Duncan in the foursomes to beat Hagen and Barnes, 9 and 8.
After the matches, Ryder had tea with British Team Members George Duncan and Mitchell. Also joining them were Hagen and American teammate Emmett French. Duncan suggested Ryder provide a trophy and encourage the establishment of matches on a regular basis. Ryder agreed at once and commissioned the design of the gold chalice that bears his name and Mitchell’s likeness on the top.
Few amateurs who took up golf after their 50th birthday have left as many positive impressions upon the game as Samuel Ryder. Born in 1858, he was the son of a Manchester corn merchant and educated at Manchester University. His father doubted the wisdom of his son’s plans to sell penny seed packets to English garden lovers. The young Ryder decided he would go into business on his own, moved south to St Albans in Hertfordshire and formed the Heath and Heather Seed Company. His business quickly prospered, and in 1906 his social standing improved to the point where he was elected mayor of St Albans. He became ill due to overwork, and fresh air and light exercise were prescribed as part of the cure. He was encouraged to take up golf. Reared on music and cricket, Ryder at first spurned the idea, but later relented.
Ryder first enlisted a professional named Hill from a local nine-hole course to guide him through his golf fundamentals. Later, Ryder employed Mitchell as his exclusive instructor at an annual fee of £1,000. Ryder practiced rain or shine, six days a week (never on Sunday), for a year. He was given instruction at Marlborough House, his home, on driving and iron shots, and he hit chip shots over a hedge in the paddock. He followed up with putting.
After his rigorous practice regimen, Ryder decided he could apply for membership at Verulam Golf Club. By age 51, he boasted a six handicap and joined the Verulam Golf Club in St Albans in 1910. Within a year he was elected Captain of the club, and later held the title in 1926 and ’27. He sponsored a Heath and Heather Tournament in 1923, which was restricted to professionals. Among the field was Mitchell, a former gardener himself, and considered one of the finest players in Great Britain to have ever won an Open Championship.
Ryder relished the 1926 unofficial international match between the Americans and British at Wentworth, watching Mitchell and Duncan defeat Hagen and Barnes.
“Why can’t they all get to know each other?” said Ryder.
“I will give £5 to each of the winning players, and give a party afterwards, with champagne and chicken sandwiches.”
Later that evening in a pub, Duncan turned to Ryder and said, “This is wonderful. It’s too bad we don’t have a match like this which is official.”
“Why not?” Ryder asked. Soon, the deed of gift was drafted with Ryder agreeing to donate a solid gold cup, worth £250. The cup was designed by Mappin & Webb Company. Ryder insisted that a golfing figure adorn the lid and that it resemble Mitchell. The first official Ryder Cup Matches were arranged for June 3-4, 1927, at the Worcester (Mass.) Country Club.
An appeal for £3,000 to finance the first British Ryder Cup Team was met with apathy and fell £500 short of the goal, but Ryder made up the deficit. After Ryder, the biggest single contribution was £210 from the Stock Exchange Golf Society. With no Order of Merit money-winning list available, the famed British triumvirate of Harry Vardon, James Braid and James Taylor acted as team selection committee.
Samuel Ryder, who would serve two terms as mayor of St Albans, lived to see two Ryder Cup Matches on his home soil. While celebrating the holidays with his family in London, he died of a massive hemorrhage on January 2, 1936. He was 77. His eldest daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Claisen, sent her father’s favorite mashie (5-iron) to be placed in his coffin. Another of his daughters, Mrs. Thomas Scarfe, took over the family business. However, she never shared her father’s passion for golf.
Ryder’s youngest daughter, Joan, was her father’s constant companion at all his golfing events. She witnessed all Ryder Cup Matches in Great Britain, and once in America, in 1983, when the US edged the Europeans at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
In 1981, Joan met the Duke of Kent at the Matches at Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, England. She told the royal guest that her father had been surprised by the success of the Matches.
“He had the idea that when the Americans came over for a match he would give a ‘small friendly lunch party’ to both teams,” said Joan. The Duke gazed at the spectators swarming near the 18th green, and said: “I wonder what your father would think of this little lunch party!” Joan Ryder’s final appearance at The Ryder Cup Matches was at The De Vere Belfry in 1985. She called that edition of The Matches “the most exciting ever.” Later that year, she died at her home in Sussex at age 81.
War-Torn Matches With the outbreak of World War II, The Ryder Cup Matches were suspended from 1939-45, and the US retained the trophy from its 1937 victory. However, the United States continued the spirit of The Matches by selecting a ten-member team that participated in “challenge” matches to raise funds for the American Red Cross, various service organizations and other war-related efforts. With The 1939 Ryder Cup Matches cancelled, challenge competitions were arranged from 1940- 43, with two at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield, Michigan, in 1940 and 1942: at Detroit Golf Club, in 1941: and at Plum Hollow Country Club in 1943. The Ryder Cup Team, which had various members during that period, won four of the five challenge matches.
Walter Hagen captained the 1939, ’40 and ’41 Ryder Cup Teams, while Craig Wood captained the Team in 1942 and 1943. There was no competition in 1939, though The Matches were set for Ponte Vedra Country Club in Florida in November of that year. The 1939 US selections were repeated in 1940 in a challenge match at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Michigan, against Gene Sarazen’s Challengers. Sarazen, who was left off The Ryder Cup Team, challenged Hagen by assembling a team that included Ben Hogan, Jimmy Demaret and Craig Wood.
In 1939, The Professional Golfers Association of Great Britain had selected eight players and Captain Henry Cotton before war interrupted further plans. The eight players named were: Jimmy Adams, Dick Burton, Sam King, Alf Padgham, Dai Rees, Charles Whitcombe and Reg Whitcombe. The remaining two members were never filled.
During the war, the exhibition matches brought together the greatest players of the era, including amateur Bobby Jones who led his team to an 8 1/2 to 6 1/2 upset of the Ryder Cup Team, August 23-24, 1941, at Detroit Golf Club.
Europeans join the Fight for the Cup In 1973, The Matches were contested for the first time in Scotland at historic Muirfield. The PGA of Great Britain altered its selection procedure by having eight players chosen from a year-long points system and four by invitation.
During The 1977 Matches at Royal Lytham & St Annes, Jack Nicklaus approached the PGA of Great Britain about the urgency to improve the competitive level of The Matches. The issue had been discussed earlier the same day by both Past PGA President Henry Poe and British PGA President Lord Derby. Nicklaus pitched his ideas, adding: “It is vital to widen the selection procedures if The Ryder Cup is to continue to enjoy its past prestige.”
The changes in team selection procedure were approved by descendants of the Samuel A. Ryder family along with The PGA of America. The major change was expanding selection procedures to include players from the British PGA European Tournament Division Order of Merit, and “that European Members be entitled to play on the team.”
This meant that professional players on the European Tournament Players Order of Merit could be natives and residents of countries other than the British Isles, as long as they were from continental Europe. The recommendation and succeeding approval of the new selection process followed another American victory at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 1977.
The first Ryder Cup Matches under the expanded European selection format were played at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The first two Europeans to make the overseas squad were a pair of Spaniards-Severiano Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido. Ballesteros has gone on to become one of the all-time winners in The Matches. He has a record of won 20, lost 12 and halved five and has earned 22 1/2 points in 37 Ryder Cup Matches.
The move to include the continental players was a major step in upgrading the Ryder Cup competitive level. The US had won all but one outing from 1959 to 1977, being tied, 16-16, in a memorable duel in 1969 at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England.
Expanding the selection procedure to include The European Tour provided the British PGA with a much greater pool of talent from which to select their Team. The European Tour Order of Merit also ensured a team comprised of golfers who were playing their best at the time of selection.
The effect of this continental Tour, with its varying types of golf courses, climates, food, language and customs, was to produce players of unprecedented durability. They possessed the technique and confidence to deal with all course situations and make The Ryder Cup Matches even more of a quality event.
Ryder Cup Format Changes
From the beginning of the series through 1959, The Ryder Cup competition was comprised of four foursomes (alternate shot) matches on one day and eight singles matches on the other day, each of 36 holes.
The format was changed in 1961, to provide four 18-hole foursomes matches the morning of the first day, four more foursomes that afternoon, eight 18-hole singles the morning of the second day and eight more singles that afternoon. One point was at stake in each match, so the total number of points was doubled to 24. In 1963, fourball (better-ball) matches were added for the first time, boosting the total number of points available to 32.
The format was altered again in 1977, this time with five foursomes on opening day, five four-ball matches on the second day, and 10 singles matches on the final day. This reduced the total points to 20.
In 1979, when the Great Britain & Ireland Team was expanded to include players from European countries, the format was revised to provide four fourball and four foursomes matches the first two days and 12 singles matches on the third day. The total points awarded were 28. This format will continue through The 2004 Matches.
The Ryder Cup Matches were interrupted for the second time in history following the September 11, 2001, attack upon America. Some eight days following the tragedy, The 2001 Matches were rescheduled, with all future competitions conducted in even-numbered years.

The Lakers may be thinking about making a phone call to E! Entertainment about moving “Khloe & Lamar” to another day. The reality show about the Lakers’ Lamar Odom and his wife Khloe Kardashian is attracting a large audience for the cable network, but it may be a Sunday curse for the two-time defending champions. Since the April 10 premiere of “Khloe & Lamar,” the Lakers have lost three consecutive Sunday games. It’s doubtful Odom is in a celebratory mood to watch his show after his team loses. The Lakers lost to Oklahoma City 120-106 on April 10. The following Sunday, they lost their first playoff game to the New Orleans Hornets 109-100. They fell again to the Hornets this last Sunday, 93-88, a game that tied the best-of-seven series at two games. Maybe moving the show to another day would bring good luck back to the Lakers. The series debut of E!’s Khloe & Lamar, chronicling the lives of Khloe Kardashian and husband Lamar Odom, drew 2.6 million total viewers at 10 p.m. Compared to Kourtney and Kim Take New York, which attracted 3 million to its January premiere, Khloe & Lamar was down.
But when Kris lays into Khloe about her weight effecting the business, she gets very upset. “To tell me that I am ruining an entire brand because of my weight gain, that makes me feel like shit. Get over yourself. You’re such a f**king raging lunatic and you are so evil,” Khloe says of Kris and explains that if she wants to get pregnant, she couldn’t be on a crazy diet, “Do you want me to get pregnant? Do you want me lose weight?” Eventually Khloe breaks down to Lamar after a photo shoot and says on the kitchen floor crying, “Everything around me has really been eating away at me and it’s really making me insecure.I’m just a little large and that’s not fun to see.I’m so f**king fat. This is what this is about. Trying to make everybody happy My mom think I’m ruining quick trim. I’m so sick of pretending to be happy about my weight just to be a good role model when I’m f**king disgusting.” OK! NEWS: KHLOE KARDASHIAN ODOM TO GUEST STAR ON LAW & ORDER – LOS ANGELES But hubby Lamar reassure Khloe that she is beautiful and makes her feel much better. For those who feel there’s a shortage of Kardashian related television, worry no more, because this Sunday marks the premiere of Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom’s E! reality series Khloe and Lamar. And if you’re counting down the minutes to airtime, E! has you covered – as the network has released a sneak preview of the show – and it’s got enough PDA, indoor Segway riding and heated arguments to keep anyone satisifed. The clip includes a look inside Lamar’s contentious relationship with his estranged father, behind the scenes footage of the making of the couple’s unisex fragrance, “Unbreakable,” and the always enjoyable and gold standard of reality television – loads of personal drama.
When you have come to the conclusion that you want to start using stock trend analysis to get better returns from your investments in the stock market, the logical next question is how to do such a trend analysis. Making a stock trend analysis is no rocket science but it is also not something that you just do like that. And especially when you invest your money based on the conclusions of your stock trend analysis, you want to be cautious.
The good news is that there are quite a number of stock trend analysis services out there that are doing this for you and that are training you in making a technical analysis of stock trends.
When looking at different stock trend analysis methods, the first aspect to check is on what the analysis is performed. Is the analysis done on the trend of an individual stock price of a company or is the analysis done on the movements of an overall stock index for a certain stock market. There are no rights or wrongs here.
We can only make the note that discovering trends in the share price of one particular company does not imply that these trends are also applicable to other companies. On the other hand, a trend in the stock market index is shared by most companies that are listed on that particular stock market.
Furthermore, please keep in mind that the share price fluctuation in an individual company is much more subject to the daily news for that particular company. Trends for individual companies can be more difficult to identify than for the overall market and could therefore be less reliable.
Within the range of technical analysis tools, there is a lot of variety. Based on historical analysis, certain patterns are expected to be followed more often than other patterns by a certain development in the market. It takes a study to recognize all the different patterns, their possible implications and their likely limitations.
Other stock trend analysis methods just focus on identifying the current trend in the market. Their objective is to identify this trend as early as possible during the trend and with an as high probability of being correct about it.
These two objectives compete with each other. If the market has been rising for a year, everybody can see that there was a rising trend. However, if you want to capitalize on this trend as an investor, you like to have jumped on that trend as early as possible. And when a trend is not clearly established yet, the identified trend is maybe no trend at all.
In summary, we can say that there are different methods of stock trend analysis. Each of them would require some study to master them. The good news is that there are people out there who are teaching and sharing their methods. Each investor is advised to understand a certain method clearly before putting his or her money on it.

The news of Chris Brown attacking Rihanna that one deadly night has never seemed to fade away. Rihanna now clarifies that she has agreed to the restraining order being lifted upon him. This is result allows Brown to attend the same award shows as Rihanna, this too allows Brown to be in any radius to Rihanna, but does not obligate Rihanna to talk to her ever again in her entire life. By doing this, this has helped Brown return to the normal life and has for sure made it a lot easier for the judges. So long that Brown restrains from harassing, and even further molesting her, then all should be in order.
Twenty three in age and escalating in fame, this young lady is totally catching the attention of many especially having starred topless for Nivea. Unlike other celebrities, Rihanna had a genuine smile on her face making her steal the attention of many and for sure making her look even more adorable. This queen of the chart is staying long in Hollywood. As much as the incident with Chris Brown left a mark, this has not stopped contra-sayings stating that the incident was first started by Rihanna with live pictures that portrait the two in incident. Whoever says what, we all hope the storm ends soon.
Who would ever imagine that Swift would ever go out on a date with Chord Overstreet. Not that it’s Overstreet, but the guy has gone through many rumors about being with many women before Swift swiftly moves in. Now that Kelly Osbourne and Naya Rivera are out of sight, the camera is focused on the two, first caught at an LA Kings game several days ago. The two look incredibly cute together and have many hearts falling apart to see how Overstreet is totally into Taylor. Returning to the States several weeks a go being on an Asian Tour, apparently Swift is ready to step on to the next level of carrier, bringing relationship ties to recognition, not only to herself but too for public.
Previously rumored to be enchanted to Adam Young the vocalist to Owl city, Taylor was replied with a Valentine note stating how he was enchanted to meet her himself. Whatever happened to the two, no one knows, but that doesn’t matter anymore for Chord Overstreet is totally over-challenging the previous. This is not surprising as the beautiful singer has talents inside out. A swift as a fairy, and ablity to rock country songs into a fairy chant, who will not fall head over heels for her. But beneath what is seen, who ever knew she had been learning rap?
Move aside and give way for Pattinson’s statement on his love life. Giving away details or chunky information about his love life is not him. Leaving personal issues to be digested to the public makes it least essential. Given the aforementioned, he obviously left out precious details about his love life with Kirsten Stewart. Not surprisingly, this heart-stealing, handsome neck-biter has majored in many other movie fields. Remember me and Bel Ami are just other proofs that handsome is not all you need to rise and shine. To the credit of both, his secret relationship with co-actress Stewart has exceeded both starring and personal sphere at once. Who is not jealous of Stewart?
Even more, Uma Thurman has something to say about Pattinson, so watch out ladies as Thurman has just entered the club! Seeing great potentials in his character, Thurman states that he is everything Hollywood ever needs. Fine lady commenting on a fine man, the heat is rising. Will Stewart need to be in alert? Perhaps not as Pattinson says deep feelings and passion walk together. With either of the two, do not expect him to be in for anything superficial as he likes his relationships deep. As nothing dies once has gone live, Pattinson surely knows the corridors of the damaging rumors of Hollywood and is staying well out of it.
Starting off as a childhood singer, young Britney was everyone’s sweetheart, stealing the hearts of many. Where’d all the good days of her go? Other than moving recklessly slow, she’s moving slowly back up. From number one on any TV Chart, she hit ground zero after marrying to Kevin Federline automatically ending her singing carrier and any other carrier that was attached to her. Being in several affairs, here and there, hospitalized for psychotic issues, and several issues with the police officers, she is gradually making her way back up. Wasting some several years of life, this once-queen-of-pop-on-earth thanks father Jamie and Bryan Spears for assisting her days and making sure she stayed out of the many places and people that once wrecked her life.
That turning point finally did come at VMA 2008 after destroying herself so bad several years before at the same stage. Snatching away three awards altogether this lady queen sent the message smoothly; I’m back! In only a few years she managed to plunge low and soar high making her a symbol of Hollywood euphoria damage that has successfully returned to normal. Not owning a cell phone and taking baths twice a day beware for this time she really is on the move.
As much as many say yes, here, it is totally a No. Britney is not pregnant and not planning to be in the upcoming months, more or less. Many have spread judgments over the ex-wife of Jason Trawick and mention that she is pregnant for the third time. High on cocktails and the best around, it is unlikely that this time she will come about bearing a third. Starting her carrier as a teenage singer, and a well-known girlfriend of Justin Timberlake, Britney had her hands full on awards before plunging into a meltdown and turning to dangerous substances.
Leaving a deep impact to the foreign impression to her fans and Hollywood speculators, Britney has not managed to rise smoothly. Until she learns how to get her hands off substances, she has a long way to go. Unlike other Hollywood actresses, Khloe and Kim Zolciak really do have news to share. Modeling for Dolce and Gabbana is helping her crawl back into her comfort zone. Being true to herself has made her loved by her many fans out there although arousing rumors here and there at the same time. Everyone loves Britney but apparently it’s just not Britney’s turn yet to be in the spotlight.
Celebrating his birthday just a couple of days ago, an interesting question arise. Conquering every chart, playlist countdown, major box office from the US to the whole wide world, who doesn’t know Bieber? As reported by The Los Angeles Times, he is about to enter the world of comedy. Yes comedy, and not just comedy he will be starring with Ashton. The big question now is, will he anage to conquer this field too, or will he be just another? A tough question to ask as Bieber has not mentioned much upon it. Given this, doubling as a top music singer and a Hollywood actor, he is bound to take things to the next level of achievement.
Yes true, this talented teenage singer has proved powerful scoring first rank with Never Say Never and managed to stay settled for weeks. But juggling singing and acting has not proven successful for many that have already given it a go. Comedy to be specific, needs more than a face, it needs skill. Can he make girls scream as much as he can make people laugh into tears? The upcoming What Will Kenny Do? Will show you what Bieber is really all about.
Despite the many judgments coming across the Kardashian family, they are still on the run of keeping things real. It’s not the fame, it’s not too the glamour, because to them it’s about being there for each other. Interviewed in a separate session, mother Kris, also as manager; states that as much as they do not perform as singers or actors, they do so contribute in their own way. Sharing family values to the many who watch, that is surely more than enough. Owning their own fashion lines even before the Keeping Up with the Kardashians, all three have surely made their mother proud. Being dependant since the age of 13, very little can compete to their dependence.
Being five siblings in a house surely gives viewers at home the true idea of what life demands from a family. To put each other first even if you yourself are in trouble, to help out when you have the least it takes and to be honest to each other despite how much it feels best to be kept inside. Kris asks in return, is it really about what they do? It’s not about what they do and how people see them or us, it is about how everyone means to each other.
Living Hollywood life is full of intrigues. Although we see it as a lot of joy and fun with the glamorous styles and expensive stuffs, nobody, not even a big star, that would feel happy when they have to face divorce. The hard life in Hollywood in facts changes many aspects of life, including the way people communicate and how they define their love and relationships.
Thanks to these couples that show how the Hollywood life can also seem that affectionate and truly outstanding with the long lasting commitment in their marriage. There are several couples in Hollywood that, surrounded with intrigues and tricks, could stay and maintain their love story, even until 20 years long.
Let us see how Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson present us the happy marriage that lasts for more than 20 years. Hanks states that maintaining the family is much harder than playing a role in a film. Thus, quality time in family means a lot for him. At the next line, there is the romantic couple of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith that got married in 1997. Third, counted as the longest time couple in Hollywood is Danny DeVito dan Rhea Perlman with 25 years of marriage.
Being a public figure is not always good. More and more Hollywood celebrities are getting popular with more movies and awards they get, but at the same time, the popularity jeopardizes their own pride. Like what often happens lately, the leaked naked photos of Hollywood celebrities make the sensation around the world. The bad catastrophe is currently happening to Vanessa Hudgens, the young actress raising popular that now gets more and more talked after some unknown hacker spread her naked photos stolen from her Gmail account.
The FBI says that there are more Hollywood celebs that would be the victims as well, about 50 and most of them are females. However, Hudgens photos were already shocking the world that she is still underage. The risk and cost of popularity has to be in fact paid with pride and sacrifice. Naked photos that are often made by the Hollywood stars are usually made for their private collection, but when it comes to the hackers, the next day it can be for the public consumption.
The report has not already mentioned the other fifty stars that would probably got their naked photos leaked, but hopefully none of their photos would be for public.
Famous personalities are always interesting to be discussed in many ways. While they are being complimented on some achievements, they are also commented – sometimes in a harsh way – on their flaws. Although everybody knows that no one is flawless including celebrity, no one would feel comfortable when their flaws are covered by media. To make matters worse, the exposure of their flaws can be improper as well. This improper exposure of celebrity gossip is the thing that annoys most celebrities.
Can you imagine seeing your photo in which you are not in the right moment to be photographed? This kind of moments is great for paparazzi to take only to be exposed to the media for the sake of magazine sales increase. Such photos as private occasions with a new spouse, wrong costume in a certain occasion, or unintentional mistakes in public places, including celebrity gossip and rumors on their personal lives are among the annoyance that celebrities have to live with.
Although some famous celebrities did have some lawsuit against them, the photographs are already exposed everywhere. This may seem that the lawsuit effort becomes useless considering the embarrassment from celebrity gossip. Many paparazzi just get away with it and public still remember having seen those photos. In short, being a celebrity is not always nice since they have to really pay attention to their appearance and manner anywhere.
There are some reasons why people watch news. The first reason is of course to get the update of the latest home and world situation. The second reason is to kill the time while you are having a rest which means that you do not really want to hear or see anything too serious. The latter often becomes the reason of people watching entertainment such as celebrity news. Why is celebrity news entertaining?
There are some answers for this question. First of all, celebrities are all looking good and we naturally like anything that looks good. With their appearance, we do not pay attention much to what is really being covered in the celebrity news; instead we observe their physical appearance. From this observation, we conclude the current fashion and hair style. Some celebrities do their best to keep up with the latest fashion while some others enjoy becoming the trend-setters.
The other factor why celebrity news is entertaining is that many people have enough with serious news around the home country and the world especially with the politic, economic or crime news. All of those only add to anxiety and fear instead of peace. Unless the news is really important concerning the interesting current issue from which we can learn something, it is draining your energy to watch the news.
As the fame can be something dangerous for the whole aspects of life, it can destroy relationships and tear them apart how good you try to maintain it. This is happening to the Cyrus family. The presence of media and paparazzi apparently help a celebrity to raise popularity, but at the same time, it can be another boomerang than turns back as a catastrophe. The Cyrus family that has already got some problem regarding the previous Miley’s clip videos considered as vulgar, now is examined with the problem of communication. The small family has however resolved with the trust among each other and Cyrus tells the media that his relationship with his daughter comes at the utmost quality of a normal family relationship although surrounded with fame. The photo taken by paparazzi that seemed to show Miley being drunk, stumbled while was going out of Dr.Luke’s place, a songwriter, was one of the examples. It was just actually that Miley got too much flash on her face while she was stepping out of home and got to the car. The best communication from heart to heart between the father and the daughter has anyway resolved it and make their relationship tightened.
Everyone must have their own competence which is unique from one to another person. From the many professions that can be chosen, some people choose a career as a singer for some reasons. First, this is the skill that they can do at their best. Secondly, being a top music singer promises a lot of advantages, such as becoming popular and getting good returns as a result. In fact, this particular reason often becomes the basis of someone’s decision to become a singer: fame
There are essential things to take into account if you want to become top music singer. To start with, surely you are aware of this: you must know how to sing in the real sense. Singing is not just letting out your voice, but combining it with other techniques. This means that you should start learning to sing right. Bear in mind that this will be your professional career, so be serious in crafting and improving your ability by studying the techniques from your most admired singers.
Taking up singing lessons is also a great help to become top music singer in that it will improve your voice quality especially if you have a professional voice trainer. You will be able to learn more than just singing. Next, you have to have your own color. Be confident and comfortable with your own style, and this can be applied even when you simply sing in a karaoke booth!
Being famous seems like a nice dream to common people, but is it really true? Famous people such as Hollywood actress or actors actually have hard times, too, when it comes to privacy. Popular from starring hit movies certainly is something to be proud of. However, their life has changed since they are well known. Strolling in a peaceful morning becomes a luxury. Shopping in a nearby mall wearing only plain t-shirt and jeans has to be thought of twice considering the crowd that will come to them.
This is what happens to Hollywood actress as well. While they enjoy their life from being famous having lots of privilege, they are now not the same common person anymore in front of public. They are like a magnet which can pull anything towards them. This situation is probably still thrilling at the beginning, but it can turn into annoyance in the long run.
Another shock of being a Hollywood actress is probably public’s enthusiasm towards the style such as fashion and hair style. Media always has a way in making comments on how they dress or how their hair is styled. Of course the comments are both good and bad. However, the media can be mean about a famous personality’s appearance.
There is a common perception that the life of a celebrity is like living in a heavenly dream. People from the age range of teenagers to twenties or early thirties follow whatever style their idol celebrity has including their private life. Why is their life story so entertaining that many people would spend most of their time watching or reading celebrity gossip? There are some reasons to this question.
First, following their update is like bringing a dream life into reality. Those who are tired of their routine or those who are not occupied by busy schedule think that those gossips are like a real soap opera which is glamorous and yet real. This is the sensation of keeping up to date with celebrity gossip. Moreover, while a celebrity is being reported, his or her style is also being covered such as the way he or she dresses, or the hairstyle.
The other reason why celebrity gossip is favorite to many people is that it is shown in the time when many people are at home watching television. While during the day they are busy at work, they want to have something light to substitute the heavy news such politic or economic review. All in all, people in favor of anything too serious nowadays.
The hot gossip about the new young couple Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez makes more and more girls are getting in a hard jealousy. The big fans of Justin Bieber attack Gomez with tweets to show her their jealousy. Gomez says that there can be 1000 positive comments, but one only negative comment would be able to knock her down. She admits the negative effect of Facebook and Twitter for her, especially after she reveals the public about her relationship with Bieber.
Thus, this young singer launches her first single titled “Who Says” to tell all of the world about her personal experience about the jealousy she accepts from many people. This song, says Gomez, is a message as well for her big fans. She is touched with the song and she expects to give it as a good present for her fans.
Although she is now 18, but Gomez admits that she still feels to be 15. The song reveals how this raising star grows as a young singer. She also says that she often misses her family and friends that cannot stay with her when she’s away for shows. She reveals all at Ryan Seacrest’s radio show at March 8th.
